Sandstorm (Sandy) came to ABR from Brownsville underweight with a respiratory infection. She is now a healthy, happy 50 pound 2 year old who is spayed, HW-, crate, house and leash trained. Sandy is a blonde Boxer mix with a full tail, soft coat, frequent smile and tiny little kisses. Sandy recently had some Boxer bumps removed from the top of her head and she's healing nicely. Sandy lives with 4 other dogs, 2 Boxers and 2 Boxer mixes, and does very well with all of them. She especially loves to sleep with her head on grumpy Oscar. Sandy knows sit, stay, go back, wait (for food, treat, door), leave it, don't beg, out (of the room or human space), nap time (for kennel), that's enough (if play gets too rough), come inside, and scoot (to make room on a bed, couch, etc). She is very smart and curious, and still a bit of a puppy. She is very food oriented so treats and praise get much better results than scolding. She will run to her crate for naptime for a high value treat, but scamper to the end of the house if she feels she's being scolded with no treat. Meal times are always supervised so Sandy doesn't finish in a hurry and try to swipe her poor senior sister's food. She knows it's not allowed, so usually a Sandy no is sufficient to redirect her. She loves being bathed and brushed and snuggling at bedtime. Sandy learns quickly and wants to please (and earn that treat) so her behavior at home is very good. She has the exuberance of a puppy outside her home so she is not a good walking partner for a child or a timid handler. She insists on meeting every person and dog while outside her home, although she would have no idea what to do if she met them. Her demeanor improves with every outing, so it's just a matter of repeated exposure and calm reassurance before she's a master. However, she is very good with children after the initial exuberance. Sandy will happily be as active or as mellow as the situation calls for. Because she is a Boxer mix, she would do well as a jogging buddy. And she is a pro snuggler. Sweet, smart, happy little scamp, Sandstorm.
