If you're looking for a well-trained, mellow canine companion, this is your boy. Sweet and gentle, Barney can be shy upon meeting new people, but warms up quickly. While he loves the occasional jog and adores swimming and playing with his toys, his favorite thing to do is hang with his human pals. After working on his skills (of which he has many!) or taking a dip in the lake, Barney will be your go-to napping and snuggling partner. In addition to all of Barney's wonderful natural qualities, he has been working hard to be a dog you can take anywhere with pride. Barney has been working on his Canine Good Citizen skills with APA staff and volunteers. To pass the American Kennel Club's CGC test (and be considered CGC-ready by APA), a dog must demonstrate obedience and general reliability in real world situations. An APA CGC-ready dog knows sit and down, walks nicely on leash, will sit calmly when you are approached by strangers or another dog, won't approach people or dogs without permission, stays in sit or down until told 'free,' and comes when called. This training is very connected to your dog's relationship with you, so regardless of where Barney is in this training program at the time of adoption, APA will work with you to help you establish this relationship and keep the training going.
